FOOTBALL AT FENWAY
The Redskins win a thriller
on a blocked extra point

October 8, 1933 ... Playing sensational football at times, the Redskins opened their five game home stay at Fenway Park, turning back Harry Newman and his New York Giants by one point.  Great runs, marvelous spot blocking, accurate forward passes highlighted this game.  Newman did his stuff with the ball , contributing a startling 50 yards one way and 80 yards up the field for a touchdown., but it wasn't enough.  Six different touchdowns were made by six different players, but the Skins made all their extra points, and Turk Edwards blocked one Giant point after and that was different.

Cliff Battles and Jim Musick came up big, and Ernie Pinckert showed why he's one of the best blocking backs around.  The game opened with the Redskins driving for two first downs, but an interception brought it to a halt.  After a couple of exchanges, Len Grant recovered a fumble for New York on the Redskins 12-yard line.  Runs by Newman and Owen proved nothing, but a pass from Newman to Tiny Feather brought the ball close to the goal line.  Bo Moienda crashed it through for the first score and the Giants were up 7-0.

Cliff Battles reeled off 47 yards two plays after the kickoff, and as the first period closed the Redskins were on the Giant 21-yard line with a first down.  Bill Morgan intercepted a pass to end the Redskins drive and the Giants took over on the Skins' 48.  Morgan then romped 37 yards to the Boston 12-yard line.  The Redskins held New York forcing Ken Strong to try a 38-yard field goal which was wide left.  The Skins took over with Marger Apsit hitting Musick for 20 yards.  Musick then smashed through to the Giant four yard line.  Musick again and again for the touchdown and the score was tied at 7-7.

Rabbit Weller scored for the Redskins again on a fine 40-yard dash, behind beautiful blocking, especially by Jim Kemp.  The half ended with Boston leading 14-7, but the third period hardly had begun with the Giants' Stu Clancy hitting Ray Flaherty on the wing getting down to the Boston 16.  Jack McBride picked up five, Clancy for four and Clancy again for no gain.  On fourth down Clancy broke over the goal line but fumbled and in the mad scramble Glenn Campbell recovered for the Giant touchdown.  Turk Edwards then became the hero by breaking through and blocking Newman's try for the extra point.  The Skins still lead 14-13 when the dust settled.

BO MOIEDA SCORES FOR THE GIANTS

The Redskins took the next kickoff and marched down the field.  It was Battles, Pinckert and Musick carrying and carrying again.  Musick brought the ball down to the Giant six yard line for a first down, the Battles took the ball around end and down the sideline for the score.  The Giants now needed two scores.  The Giants got the ball and started another drive but were halted and were forced to have Ken Strong kick another field goal.  He kicked it low and the ball rolled down to the one yard line.  The Redskins could not move and the Giants got another chance soon getting it down to the Boston 19-yard line.  The Giants made mistakes and Strong was called on for yet another field goal attempt which he again missed.  The Redskins could not move and punted down to the Giant 15-yard line.  Strong dropped back and hit Newman with a pass at the 20.  Newman darted back and forth across the field and took it across the Boston goal line for a beautiful 80-yard score and a 21-20 ball game.  The Redskins then stepped up and stopped the Giants every time they had the ball and until the game ended.
