FOOTBALL AT FENWAY
The Redskins run wild
over Pittsburgh, 39-0

October 14, 1934 ... Scoring touchdowns from all over the field, the Redskins crushed the Pirates at Fenway Park, 39-0.  The Giants were beating the Dodgers at the same time, allowing the Skins to slide into second place.  The Redskins scored six touchdowns and on one other occasion crossed the goal line, with the score called back because of a penalty.  The story of the game is a summary of Redskin touchdowns.

After the kickoff to the Pirates, Hank McPhail intercepted a Silvio Zanielli pass at the Pirate 42-yd line.  Redskin QB Steve Hokuf flipped a short pass the Charley Malone at left end, who squirmed passed two Pittsburgh tacklers into the end zone, 7-0.  The Pirates could not move after receiving the kickoff, punted and the Redskins also were stalled.  Cliff Battles punted the ball to McNally, who fumbled the ball.  Larry Johnson recovered the ball for the Redskins on the Pitts 19-yard line.  The Skins worked the ball down to five, where Cliff Battles took it in for another touchdown, 13-0.  In the second period the Redskins received a punt a Pirate 41.  After two failed runs, Hokuf hit Pinckert at the 30-yd line, and with the aid of a great block by Flavio Tosi, picked his way in for another score, 19-0.  A great run by Ted Wright late in the first half put the ball on the Pirate 36.  Phil Sorboe came in at quarterback for the Skins and engineered a cute lateral play: Sorboe to Malone, Malone to Wycoff for another score.  Unfortunately this one was negated by a penalty as the half ended.

In the third period, the Redskins doubled their lead in the next 15 minutes.  The Skins started from their own 40 after a punt.  Teddy Wright got the ball, broke through the Pirate right side, and was in the secondary in a twinkle, and outran the safety with ease, scoring standing up, 26-0.  After the ensuing kickoff, Pinckert intercepted a pass and ran it back 38 yards to the Pirate 6-yard line.  The Redskins stalled on the try with McPhail being stopped on the one foot line, the Pirates getting the ball on downs.  The Pirates could not move and punted with the Redskins taking over on the 29.  Sorboe passed for two and ran for 12.  Pinckert got the ball and took it 15 yards for the next score, 33-0.  After the kickoff, McPhail barged through the Pirate line to intercept a lateral and raced 18-yds for another touchdown, 39-0.
