FOOTBALL AT FENWAY
The Yanks beat the Steelers 28-7 in the opener
as Pug Manders scores twice

September 25, 1945 ... The Yanks opened their football season at Fenway Park with a 28-7 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.  I was a ho-hum contest fraught with sloppy ball handling and penalties until the fourth quarter.  The night's two sparklers yanked the throng to their feet.

Trailing 21-0, the Steelers suddenly exploded with a 69-yard scoring play in which Toimi Jarvi hurled a pass to Anthony Bova, the left end, who when hit quickly flipped a lateral to burly John Lucente, the fullback.  Lucente tore like a truck down the sideline for the remaining 45 yards.  The Pittsburgh pop-off sent the Yanks into an offensive spasm of their own.

After Bob Davis had intercepted a Steeler pass at the Yanks' nine, hard running Johnny Martin came roaring over right tackle and rolled for 79 yards before he inadvertently stepped out of bounds to avoid getting tackled.  A George Cafego to Keith Ranspot pass brought the ball down to the two yard line and Pug Manders bucked it over.  It was his second and the final score of the game for the Yanks.

The Yanks had cashed in during the first three minutes of the game.  On a fourth down punt, the Steelers center snapped it high to the punter Ed Stofko.  Stofko retrieved the high pitch back at his own 12 yard line where the Yanks took over on downs.  The Yanks got it across in four attempts, the last two by Johnny Martin, who swung to his left for five yards and then to the right for five more and the touchdown.

A 53 yard scoring play in the second period made it 14-0, with Frank Martin snaring George Cafego's air-rifle heave down the sideline and storming 15 yards to pay dirt.  Don Currivan was the decoy and contributed a great block to help Martin's score.  George Cafego set up another score in the third period with a pass interception at the Pittsburgh 30.  Johnny Martin ran around right end for 28 yards from the spread and Manders, after colliding with the goal post smacked it over.  The Yanks looked rugged here and there, but the fans got their money's worth.
