“DIARY OF A WINNER”

JIMMY CALLAHAN

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM

May 19, 1912 ... No game scheduled ... The Red Sox won three of their five games last week and on the whole slightly improve their batting averages thanks to their work against the St. Louis Browns in the first three games of the week. Tris Speaker and the team with his stick, although his batting average fell from .393 two .377 while Duffy Lewis, Harry Hooper, Larry Gardner, Heinie Wagner, Hugh Bradley and bill Carrigan all made slight gains in batting.

The White Sox and closes series tomorrow and Cleveland will come for the next three games with the Athletics at Fenway Park on Friday and Saturday. The White Sox have won nine out of their 10 games on their Eastern threat, three of these at last ditch, taking advantage of mistakes by their opponents. The Cleveland team will be without that Nap Lajoie, but Joe Jackson is one of the finest hitters in the game.

Manager Jimmy Callahan of the White Sox, as evidenced in the opening game, is very popular here in Boston. The veteran player reached his position in successes in the American League through his own good qualities and has made friends by being very unselfish. He spent his early days in Fitchburg and received his early baseball education that claim with the South End baseball teams.
