“DIARY OF A WINNER”

Charley Hall stays undefeated, holding down the A's

May 28, 1912 ... The Red Sox evened the series by taking the final game from the Athletics by a 7-2 score.  Jake Stahl’s men hammered the defending champion’s pitchers unmercifully and undefeated Hall was pitching in great fashion all day, allowing the Athletics only eight hits, which was the same number of hits that the Red Sox were able to make against the four pitchers that Connie Mack put on the mound. Boston scored seven runs on eight hits, which were mixed in with some generously distributed base on balls, while the hits of Philly were scattered through seven innings. The Athletics made only three runs and struggled to get there men over the plate.

Even his desire to beat the Red Sox three out of the four games, did not keep Connie Mack from his purpose of trying out his secondary pitchers here in Boston. Mack sent Byron Houck to the mound to start the game, later bringing in Harry Martin, who recently pitched for Tufts College. Next came Lefty Russell and finally Herb Pennock, a well-built left-hander, who look better than the other three men combined.

The Red Sox got two hits off each of these pitchers, scoring three runs off Houck, and two runs apiece off each of his successors . Pennock however held the Red Sox scoreless for four innings and pitched well in the three innings, in each of which, the Red Sox had advanced a runner is far as second base and only had one out.

The Red Sox scored three runs in the first inning. Harry Hooper hit a shot down the Stuffy McInnis that he only could smother. Steve Yerkes got three bases on a liner that Amos Strunk misjudged. After Duffy Lewis drew a pass, Larry Gardner sent a hot shot to right-field, which Danny Murphy made a mess of, allowing the ball to dance away and roll down to the bullpen in the corner of the outfield. Houck then passed Hugh Bradley and Heinie Wagner, at which point Mack brought in Harry Martin, who induced Les Nunamaker to lift a fly ball out to Strunk to end the inning.

After Philadelphia scored a run in the top of the third, two more runs came over for the Sox, making it 5 to 1. Tris Speaker singled to left and beat Martin's throw, when he played Lewis' sacrifice to Jack Barry at second. Gardner walked to fill the bases but was doubled up by Bradley, who was hard shot was skillfully played by Barry. Lewis came in with the fifth Boston run on Wagner's double over Frank Baker's head.

In the fourth, Martin passed Hall and then was taken out for Russell. Hooper laid down a bunt that Baker handled nicely, but then Yerkes knocked one onto the left-field bank for two bases, scoring Hall with the sixth Boston run.

But the last four innings the Red Sox attack amounted to very little, although Hall's efficiency on the mound continued and the support behind him was flawless. Gardner was on hand with a couple of brilliant stops that blasted all hopes for Philadelphia that they might have a garrison finish at the end.

Charley Hall was in fine form, with great speed and good control except in the third inning, when he let up two passes, although striking out two batters. He saved two hits by some good work in covering first base.

Amos Strunk was the best hitter for the Athletics with two singles and a triple. For the Red Sox Steve Yerkes contributed a double and a three bagger, while Heinie Wagner had two doubles and Larry Gardner had two singles.

The 7-3 victory put the Speed Boys in a good mood for the four games they have to play with Washington, who have won five of the seven games played against the Red Sox so far this year.
