The
Red Sox rally falls one run short in the ninth

June 7, 1912 ... The Red Sox made a great rally in the ninth inning at Detroit today, but coming within an out of pulling the game out at the end, but the Tigers took the game by a score of 4 to 3.

Jean Dubuc pitched a masterpiece while Ray Collins was hit all over the field for 14 safe hits. No fewer than 11 Tigers were left on base however as a fielding of the Speed Boys was superb. Sharp throws by Speaker and Harry Hooper cut off many baserunners.

Twice the Red Sox had men at third with only one down and Wagner and Yerkes both failed to come across. Lewis and Wagner each got two hits of the six made by the Red Sox, while Speaker and Hooper got the other two.

During the first three innings the Tigers had no trouble in running the bases. They got four runs off the pitching of Ray Collins. In the second inning Collins hit George Moriarty on the shoulder with a pitch. Baldy Louden sacrificed him along and Oscar Stanage singled to score him with the first Tiger run.

Then in the third inning Cobb singled and stole second. Sam Crawford dropped one in right field and Cobb jogged home, drawing the throw from Hooper that allowed Crawford to make second base. Moriarty then doubled to left to score Crawford with the second run of the inning, making it 3 to 0.

In the fourth and sixth innings the Tigers knocked out three base hits in each inning but got no runs. Three more hits were put together in the eighth. Dubuc led off with a single and scored on a two base hit by Bush, who was thrown out trying for third by Speaker. Jones singled and the next batter went out on strikes, sonly one run came across the plate.

Dubuc was bothering the Sox batters with his changeup, getting the Red Sox several times when a long fly ball or a groundout would have meant runs. Two singles, both by Lewis, was he extent of the Red Sox offense for six innings. Wagner singled in the seventh and Speaker doubled in the eighth, but neither one saw third-base and when the last inning started the fans were starting to leave the park, because the Tigers were up 4 to 0.

Then Hugh Bradley drew a walk and the batters got busy. Wagner followed with a single, sending Bradley to third and then stole second himself. Olaf Henriksen came up for Bill Carrigan and walked to fill the bases. Harry Hooper next jumped on the first ball pitched and knocked out a single to center bringing two of the runners across the plate, making it 4 to 2. Dubuc became unsteady and walked Yerkes following that. It was now up to Speaker and the Red Sox were at the top of the dugout to cheer him on. The first ball went over for a strike and Speaker looked at the next one for a ball. The third one came in fast and he fouled it off. The next one was off the plate so it to went for a ball. Finally there came the slow one and Speaker banged the ball to deep left field where Jones pulled it in at the fence for the game.
