“DIARY OF A WINNER”

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM
The Red Sox increase their lead as they beat
the White Sox again

June 16, 1912 ... The Red Sox played like champions today in Chicago, when after giving the White Sox three runs in the first inning, they ended up beating them by a score of 6 to 4. The Speed Boys never quit with Joe Wood on the mound, going right after Chicago in a businesslike manner and forcing Jimmy Callahan and his teammates to realize that they were up against a serious contender in the American League race. Both teams fought for every inch to the cheering of the crowd, who knew they were seeing a great game between two great teams.

The Red Sox scored first when Harry Hooper opened up the game with a free pass. Steve Yerkes sacrificed him to second and Tris Speaker was thrown out at first, as Hooper went to third. He then scored on a wild pitch to give the Red Sox a 1 to 0 lead.

Wood was a bit unsteady in the first inning, when the White Sox scored three runs on hits by Morrie Rath and Harry Lord. Lord banged out a home run that went under the fence in right field. Jack Fournier walked and Heinie Wagner failed to hold the throw when Fournier stole second base. He then scored when Ping Bodie singled, making it 3 to 1.

It was an off day for the Boston shortstop, who fumbled that perfect throw to second from catcher Hick Cady and made one wild throw to first himself. Those errors helped Chicago to two with their four runs. However his hit in the eighth-inning gave the Red Sox a run of their own.

Overall, Joe Wood pitched a superb game and was supported very well by Larry Gardner, Tris Speaker, Harry Hooper and Jake Stahl, as well as Cady, who did a great job catching him and has proven that he is a great find for the Red Sox in his catching, throwing and hitting ability.

The Sox had a hard task on hand to chip away at a 3 to 1 lead with Frank Lange, one of the more successful pitchers on the White Sox staff, on the mound. But the Red Sox would not be denied. They scored three runs in the fifth inning to grab a 4 to 3 advantage. Cady opened with a single and was followed by Wood, who drew a base on balls. Hooper tried to move them along with a sacrifice bunt, but he beat the throw for a hit and Cady scored on a wild throw to the plate, as Wood moved over to third. Then with two outs, Duffy Lewis got a base hit to score Hooper and Wood.

After Chicago tied the score in the seventh inning, the Red Sox scored two runs in their very next at bat. A single by Lewis, a sacrifice by Gardner, an RBI single by Stahl to score Lewis, and double to the left field corner by Wagner to score Stahl, were good for the two runs, the margin that the Red Sox won the game by.

Joe Wood but some extra fuel on his fire as the game lengthened out. Buck Weaver pulled off three remarkable assists for the White Sox and Speaker threw out a man at the plate a perfect throw. On one play, Gardner threw himself at a ball, blocking it at full reach and then scrambling to his feet and making a throw that got his man at first. Stahl also did a great job on the first base bag, digging out some poor throws in the dirt and coming across with a timely hit that sent home the run for the Red Sox that was the difference.

The Boston players were delighted with a fine showing they made, and that of the young catcher Hick Cady. Bill Carrigan was coaching on the lines and ready to go back behind the plate if he had to.

The two teams have now broken even in the six games they've played, and it looks as if the Red Sox are going to give the White Sox a great fight. The Red Sox leave for New York right after the game tomorrow and will make an effort to catch the 5:30 train out of Chicago..
