“DIARY OF A WINNER”

NATIONALS PARK

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM

June 25, 1912 ... The game against the Washington Nationals was postponed due to rain.  It was the team's first day off since their second day in Chicago.

Neil Ball, the clever infielder, who about three years ago made an unassisted triple play against the Red Sox as been bought from Cleveland and will report immediately. Ball has played in about 40 games for Cleveland the season and has a batting average of .242, coming to the Red Sox through a money consideration only, the amount not being mentioned. It is expected that he will arrive with the team when it comes home to open a series of games with the New York Highlanders next Friday.

Only eight unassisted triple plays been recorded in the history of baseball and some of these are questions or disputed. There is no question about Ball's performance however.

It came about in the second inning of the game between the Red Sox and Cleveland on July 19, 1909. Ball was utility infielder at the time. Heinie Wagner led off for the Red Sox with a single to center and Jake Stahl succeeded in beating out a bunt. After trying to prevent McConnell from sacrificing, Cy Young threw the ball down the middle of the plate and McConnell drove it on a line towards center field. Ball leaped in the air and caught the baseball cleanly, retiring McConnell, took two steps, touched second retiring Wagner, took two more steps and touched Stahl who had no chance to turn around and head back to first.

Manager Jake Stahl was ill suffering from a stomach flu.  He felt better but will not play tomorrow.
