“DIARY OF A WINNER”

TRIS SPEAKER

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM
The Red Sox turn in a double victory

June 28, 1912 ... About 20,000 fans welcomed the Sox home, as they trounced the hapless Highlanders twice today, first by 5-4 and later 6-4. The New Yorkers were outhit, outplayed and looked bad.

Tris Speaker hit two doubles and homered for the Sox in the first game. The Sox jumped out to a two run lead in the first inning thanks to bad fielding and a long home run to center by Speaker. With Hugh Bedient on the rubber, it looked like a sure thing, but it didn’t quite work that way, because after the third inning, the Speed Boys were on the wrong side of a 4-2 score for the most part, thanks to two errors by Harry Hooper in right.

Charley Hall replaced Bedient and after that, he breezed through the next six innings. The Sox scored in the seventh as Speaker doubled and scored on a single by Duffy Lewis. They got two in the eighth on a ball thrown in the dirt trying to nail Heinie Wagner at third, allowing him to score, and then Hooper knocking in Carrigan for the last run of the game.

In the second game the Sox jumped out to a quick three run lead in the first on singles by Wagner, Carrigan, Yerkes and Speaker. Ray Collins held New York in check until the fourth when he gave up a run and in the fifth when he got tagged for three more on two singles and a fine home run by Dutch Sterrett. The Sox scored again in the seventh on a single by Carrigan, a sacrifice by Bedient and another single by Steve Yerkes.

New York was all in at this point and although they had a man at second in the ninth-inning, the Red Sox easily one by a score of 6 to 4. Larry Gardner put up a great game at third but the fielding of Speaker was superb. He covered so much ground that it cannot be described. He time the ball perfectly and made hard running catches look simple.

Both games were bought to the finish and the New York men made the best stand that they have shown against the Boston team this season. Carrigan had two hits in each game. In the second game Yerkes was 3 for 5.
