“DIARY OF A WINNER”

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM
Hugh Bedient and Larry Pape are hit hard as
New York finally wins one

July 2, 1912 ... The New York Highlanders refused to allow the Red Sox to make it 15 straight wins today. They did some hard-hitting, first against Hugh Bedient and then against Larry Pape, taking off with a four-run lead and meeting every rally that the Speed Boys were able to get against their pitcher, Russ Ford.

After good start, Bedient was pounded for four hard hits in the second inning, which, with some fumbling by Steve Yerkes, provided them with a four-run margin. Later in the game, they pounded across two runs off Larry Pape, and then in the ninth-inning, as if anticipating an 11th hour rally by the Red Sox, they pushed over three more for good measure, which, as it happened, they needed to get because the final score was 9 to 7.

Ford was hammered by Boston, but he managed to keep the dozen hits well scattered, each inning producing at least one base hit, but the Red Sox were not able to bunch them together consistently. The Red Sox had 14 extra bases on their 12 hits. Larry Gardner pounded out two home runs and Duffy Lewis got another, but there was no one on base at the time in either case. Besides those home runs, the Red Sox had two triples and a double. There was nobody on base when Jake Stahl ripped off his triple, nor when Gardner poked out a double. Harry Hooper's triple in the ninth-inning, when Olaf Henriksen was on first base, scored a run, but all the other long balls counted for nothing in knocking in baserunners.

New York saw their four-run lead cut in half, when Lewis got a home run in the second inning and when Gardner came across with another in the fourth. In the fifth inning however, the Highlanders bunched three hits together and brought in two runs to make their lead 6 to 2.

The Red Sox scored in each of the next two innings, cutting the score to 6 to 4, and when Gardner hit a home run again in the eighth, the Red Sox were only one run down. Unfortunately it was here that Larry Pape was unable to hold the game. A double by Russ Ford, singles by Bert Daniels and Jack Little, along with a triple by Guy Zinn provided a cushion for New York in the ninth-inning with a 9 to 5 lead.

Down those four runs in the ninth-inning, Henriksen came in to bat for Carrigan and singled to right. Neil Ball went in to bat for Pape and flew out to Jack Martin for the first out. Hooper then lashed out a triple to score a run but Yerkes hit a ground ball to Martin who threw him out at first. Tris Speaker, who would not gotten a hit all day, bounced a hot one off the glove over Russ Ford, that scored Hooper. But the game ended when Duffy Lewis hit a fly ball out to Guy Zinn, giving the Highlanders their 9 to 7 win.

It was game to enjoy because of the hitting and there was a lot of good plays by the fielders also. Heinie Wagner, Larry Gardner and Jake Stahl were outstanding and the visiting team outfielders were very busy, with Little and Zinn making some spectacular catches.

New York got 14 hits off the two Boston pitchers, getting to Pape 10 times in the last seven innings. Gardner was high man for the Red Sox with his two home runs and a double. The two home runs were beauties, the first one to centerfield and the other to right-center, both times the ball bouncing off the bleacher fence. Lewis' homer was over the left-field wall and was a longer hit than the first of the year, that was made by Hugh Bradley. Harry Hooper had two hits, while Speaker had one with the ball ball that just got away from Ford.
