“DIARY OF A WINNER”

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM July 12, 1912 ... Boston Red Sox won a doubleheader from the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park today, the first game by 4 to 1 with Ray Collins matched against Joe Lake, and the second game by a score of 1 to 0 in 11 innings, with Joe Wood and Ed Willett at their best. The Red Sox scored in only two innings of the 20 innings they played, while the Tigers managed to get Ty Cobb around in the ninth-inning of the first game for their only run. Both were sensational games, with Boston opening fire on Lake in the sixth inning of the first game with base hits by Steve Yerkes, Tris Speaker, Duffy Lewis, Larry Gardner and Heinie Wagner, all been good for the four runs that were needed to win the game. Ray Collins pitched masterfully, holding the hard-hitting Tigers to just four hits, while his all around support was near-perfect. The Red Sox were hitting Lake however quite easily, knocking out 12 hits and the game really was not as close as it seemed. The second game was one of the best contests seen at the ballpark the season. Willett was near-perfect, forcing Joe Wood to pitch an even more remarkable game in order to win. Wood held the Tigers to five hits in the 11 innings. There were several times when a slip up would have meant a loss for Boston, as is the case during the second inning, with men on first and second for Detroit, and Joe Wood struck out the next three men. Then in the fifth, with a man on second and one down, Wood got the next two men on easy plays. In the sixth inning, Ty Cobb led off with a double, but never left the base as Wood disposed of the next three men in order. Again in the ninth, with one, Jim Delehanty hit for two bases and was taking a big lead off second base, hoping to score on a hit, but a great throw was made by Hick Cady down to Heinie Wagner, to catch him off base for the second out. Then Wood struck out George Moriarty for the third out. In the first inning Ty Cobb was picked off second base as Heinie Wagner slipped behind him and Joe Wood turned and fired a bullet to nip him. In the first inning, Hooper was at second with one, but was thrown out trying for third. With two down in the third, both Wood and Hooper singled, but Yerkes was an easy out. Wood opened the sixth with a base hit but he never reached second. Gardner was nipped at first after reaching base in the seventh, and Speaker doubled in the ninth, with one out, only to see Lewis and Gardner thrown out at first. With one out in the 10th, Wagner walked, only to see the next two men thrown out at first on great plays by Donie Bush. There were two down in the 11th inning when Tris Speaker lined the ball off the wall in left for three bases. Duffy Lewis followed and brought him home with a sharp single for the walkoff win and the sweep of the doubleheader. Needless to say, both the fans and the players were delighted when they left the ballpark. Hugh Jennings worked on the lines in both games, encouraging his boys to the delight of the Boston fans. The day was perfect for baseball and the games are well handled by the umpires. |
