“DIARY OF A WINNER”

BUCK WEAVER

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM
The
Sox split a doubleheader with the White Sox

July 17, 1912 ... Jimmy Callahan and the Chicago White Sox game to Fenway Park today for a couple of rounds with the Speed Boys in front of 21,000 enthusiastic fans. The fans were well-paid for coming, as they saw two great games, with the White Sox taking the first game by a score of 1 to 0m Buck O'Brien matched against Ed Walsh, and the second game going to the Red Sox, 7 to 3 with Joe Wood beating Rube Peters.

Ed Walsh pitched an extremely good game, holding the Red Sox to just two singles made by Duffy Lewis and Larry Gardner, and he seemed to pitch better and grow stronger as the game progressed. However it must be said that Buck O'Brien also pitched a superb game that went down to the last inning with two down, before Buck Weaver came up with the winning run.

Eddie Collins reached first in the ninth when Larry Gardner failed to come up with his fast ground ball. Ping Bodie sacrificed him to second and Jack Fournier sent up a weak pop-up to third that Gardner gathered in. Weaver came to the plate and hit one to the fence in left-center field, good for three bases and scoring Collins with the only run of the game.

The game was well earned by the visitors who put up a significantly good fielding game, especially Weaver at short and Morrie Rath at second. The fans had little chance to root for the Red Sox in the first game and the visitors looked very pleased when the last Boston man went out. The White Sox retired to their dressing room and changed their faded gray uniforms for a set of dark blue ones and came out and went after the second game.

They scored in the very first inning on singles by Rath and one by Harry Lord, that sent Rath the third. Larry Gardner fumbled Eddie Collins' grounder and that allowed Rath to score the first run in the second game.

The home team went along for three innings with only singles by Speaker and Hooper but both men were thrown out. Speaker was nailed at the plate by Lord, who fumbled a grounder from Lewis and then chased the ball past the pitcher's mound and nailed Tris at the plate on a close call.

The Red Sox got busy in the fourth inning and scored two runs. Steve Yerkes hit the ball to left-field fence for two bases and Speaker singled, with the ball hitting the base at second. Speaker then stole second and Lewis was thrown out by Rath, who took the ball far behind second base, allowing Yerkes to score on the play. The infield closed in but Gardner hit the ball through them to score Speaker with the second run. He was then caught napping at first, thereby throwing a run away, as Jake Stahl knocked one out for two bases to follow.

The Red Sox scored one in the fifth on a single by Hick Cady and a double by Joe Wood, with the ball being thrown by the catcher, allowing Cady to score. The White Sox came back with two in the sixth on bungles by the Red Sox. Callahan led off with a single and then stole second. Harry Lord struck out, but the ball hit the ground and broke away from Cady, who with plenty of time to get his man at first, but threw it to third too late, and both men were safe. Ping Bodie came up and hit a ground ball out to Larry Gardner, who found out he was too late to get Callahan at the plate, and then threw the ball past Jake Stahl at first, allowing both the runners to get the second and third. Buck Weaver hit a ground ball to Heinie Wagner that he tried to throw before he actually caught it and the runners scored to tie up the game at 3 to 3.

Steve Yerkes in the sixth inning and Jake Stahl in the seventh inning led off with singles but never reach second base. However the Red Sox put the game on ice in the eighth-inning. It was opened with a single to center by Harry Hooper, then Yerkes smashed one through short that allowed Hooper to slip over the third-base. Speaker hit one to Harry Lord who got the ball behind third, but the throw was late at first and Hooper scored the first run of the inning. Duffy Lewis sacrificed Speaker over but was safe as the ball was thrown wide of first. With the bases now full, Larry Gardner stroked one to centerfield that scored one run, and Speaker practically stole home, as the ball was held in the infield. Stahl then struck out and Lewis tried to steal third but was thrown out by three yards. Heinie Wagner finally singled to score Gardner with the fourth run of the inning, giving the Red Sox the ultimate win by a score of 7 to 3.
