“DIARY OF A WINNER”

RAY COLLINS

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM

August 25, 1912 ... No game scheduled ... The Boston Red Sox have the distinction of having one of only two .400 hitters in the major leagues. Tris Speaker moved up to .401 through his great batting over the past week. Curiously, Speaker's best week of the year immediately followed his poorest one, for the week before he had only three hits. This past week however, he even more than made up for that shortage by poking out 14 hits and pushing his batting average up 11 points. Ty Cobb of Detroit increased his average a single point up to .416.

Joe Wood added to his lead among the American League pitchers taking both was games and running his count up to 27 wins with only 4 defeats. Eddie Plank of the Athletics is still second in winning percentage with 21 wins and 4 defeats, while Walter Johnson has 28 wins, but 7 defeats. Charley Hall, Hugh Bedient, and Ray Collins are sixth and seventh among the league leaders in winning percentage.

Hal Janvrin, the young infielder of the Jersey City International League team, became a member of the Boston Red Sox this week as they exercised their option on him. He has been the infield star of the Jersey City team all year and has played in every position of the infield. His average for the season is .289 in 105 games, with 114 hits.

Jake Stahl and his men are making it clearer every day that a long feared slump is not coming at all. It will not be surprising to see the Red Sox continue at their present speed until the pennant has been one. The substitutes on the team have caught the spirit and fight of the regulars, and perhaps no more than this past week as this been shown to be true. Neil Ball and Clyde Engle played through the six days at two of the most difficult infield positions, second and first base, making only one error apiece.
