No game scheduled ... Dutch Leonard, the pitcher for the
Denver Grizzlies has surprised the local fans as well as the fans in the
cities and towns that the Grizzlies have played at this summer. Dutch, who
soon will be with the Boston Red Sox, was farmed out to Denver, because he
was a bit wild and couldn't keep his control. At the same time the Red Sox
recognize his ability and are willing to boost his game as long as soon as
he works out his issues. While he possesses all the fire necessary to go
ahead and win at the major league level, he is not quite ready yet. It
will be admitted that Dutch is one of the speediest pitchers in the
country. He is 20 years old, energetic hustling and goes into every game
for the honor and glory and fun of winning. It should be remembered that
the Red Sox got Buck O'Brien last year from Denver and as Buck has made
good with the Red Sox, Dutch should also do fine next year. The Red Sox
have five players batting .300 or better today with Hick Cady having slipped
onto the list. Tris Speaker, Larry Gardner, Jake Stahl and Larry Pape are the
others. Ty Cobb still leads the American League in batting with a .414 average
and Speaker lost a little ground dropping from .401 to .396 this week. Joe Wood
increased his lead over all the other American League pitchers by beating
Chicago. Eddie Plank and Jack Coombs each fell off slightly in the course of the
week. Wood has won 28 games and lost 4, his percentage being .875
The Red Sox will play the New York Highlanders at the Polo Grounds tomorrow.
Some people insist that their next trip there will be against the Giants in the
World Series. Some 87,000 fans saw games at Fenway Park this past week and a
better week of baseball has rarely been seen in Boston for quite some time. |
