“DIARY OF A WINNER”

THE ROYAL ROOTERS

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM

September 3, 1912 ...  The game with the New York Highlanders was called off due to rain and might not be rescheduled. The announcement came around 1:30 on account of wet grounds. It rained hard all night and was still showering in the morning, so that the New York management decided that the game was off. The two games played here with the Highlanders were staged on a wet and slippery ground with showers during the time. The Red Sox however came out being the winners, thus downing the home team in 16 of the 17 games played. In the American League there is a rule requiring the consent of the league to a transfer of games, so that unless Boston agrees to play the game postponed, during the next visit to Boston, yesterday's game is off for good.

Charlie Hall will return to Boston with a pure white diamond weighing more than one 1 1/2 carats. It will adorn the hand of Mrs. Hall and it is a good bet that the Ventura California boy will receive a good welcome home. Duffy Lewis and the other Boston players are a pretty shrewd lot and all have longed for a diamond or two. Duffy looked the part however, sitting behind a swell cluster of stones pinned to his black string tie that cost around $350.

The Red Sox party arrived home from New York and among the travelers was Joe Wood’s mother and little sister who are paying Boston their first visit. In the party was also Tris Speaker’s mother as well as all the Royal Rooters who made the trip to NYC. The players are convinced that the hard work is done and they are now following the Giants scores.

On the way home, the players were very happy and bubbling over with good nature. They are pretty well convinced that the hard fighting is over and that it will now be smooth sailing until they clinch the pennant.
