“DIARY OF A WINNER”

COMISKEY PARK

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM

September 9, 1912 ... No game scheduled ... The Boston baseball train under the personal supervision of President James McAleer, arrived in Chicago around 2:30 this afternoon, two hours late. After leaving Boston, the weather became extremely warm and the journey to Chicago turned out to be very disagreeable and humid.

Pitcher Ben Van Dyke, bought from the Worcester club, joined the Red Sox as they passed through Worcester. That gives the team seven pitchers to finish the season with 21 players along as Hugh Bradley was the only player, not injured, to sit behind and hang around Fenway Park for the next two weeks.

The Red Sox are favorites in the city, as manager Jake Stahl is down in the local directory as a banker. Secretary Robert McRoy is a citizen of Chicago and it is here that James McAleer has found his most valuable friends. On the Red Sox first trip to Chicago, McAleer and Stahl were given cases of silver settings, and now MacAleer returns for last trip with his team, as the Red Sox are on the verge of winning the American League pennant.

Hick Cady went to his home in the suburbs but will be back and given plenty of work on this trip.
