“DIARY OF A WINNER”

LARRY PAPE

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM

September 14, 1912 ... It rained for half an hour before the time for calling the game here in St. Louis this afternoon, giving the grounds a good soaking and the game was called off by umpire Evans. This forces the Red Sox and Browns to play a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon. A large crowd should be on hand as everyone will probably turn out for a Sunday afternoon game.

Charley Hall was booked to work this afternoon with Hick Cady, and is more than likely that he will be in the first game tomorrow. The second game maybe pitched by Joe Wood but could also be pitched by either Larry Pape or young Ben Van Dyke. Wood has had a slight case of tonsillitis the last three days and is not feeling well. Ray Collins was out of his uniform this afternoon and said that he felt a little better, although quite weak. Tris Speaker and some of the other players have been complaining of sore throats and bad colds, which were picked up in Chicago with the extremely hot weather during the first two days in the city.

If rain should interfere with the doubleheader tomorrow, the Red Sox will remain over and play Monday afternoon. Otherwise, the team will leave tomorrow night at 8 PM and arrive in Cleveland at 12:30 the next day. There are four games booked with a double-header starting on Tuesday.

President McAleer will go with the team to Cleveland and leave on the next train for Youngstown, Ohio to spend a few days with old friends.
