“DIARY OF A WINNER”

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM
The
Red Sox win the 1912 pennant

September 18, 1912 ... It rained hard all afternoon in Cleveland, postponing the game to be made up as a doubleheader tomorrow.  The Red Sox returned to the hotel where the received the news that the Athletics had lost. By the Philadelphia Athletics losing to the Chicago White Sox, the Red Sox become the America League champs.  Boston can lose its remaining fifteen games while Philadelphia and Washington can win all their remaining games and still not overtake the Red Sox.

“The boys worked together as one family” said manager Jake Stahl.  “I have been given no trouble whatever, as the players had their heart in their work.  The more difficult the proposition, the stronger they went at all opponents and that is why I believe we will land the postseason series with New York. I don’t underrate the Giants, but if they can beat the Red Sox, I will take my hat off to a great ball club.”
