Buck O'Brien wins
his 20th game in season finale

The Red Sox ran through their final workout of the season by defeating the
Athletics and blanked them 3-0. Buck O’Brien won his 20th game and was in
great form , holding Philadelphia to six scattered hits. His support was
clean-cut and brilliant, with Harry Hooper, Tris Speaker and Duffy Lewis
making sensational catches. Larry Gardner tuned himself up at third base
and was very good defensively. The Red Sox scored their first run in the
sixth inning after two were out. Harry Hooper beat out a bunt by Stuffy McInnis
and scored when Steve Yerkes lined one to right-field. Danny Murphy misjudged
the ball, giving Yerkes three bases. Speaker ended the inning by popping one out
to Frank Baker.
Hick Cady opened the eighth-inning with a long double that went between Amos
Strunk and Rube Oldring. He moved to third on O'Brien's sacrifice and scored
when Hooper flew one to deep center field that Strunk chased and caught up to.
In the ninth-inning, after Lewis was thrown out at first, Gardner lined one
over second base for a double and rushed to third on Jake Stahl's long fly to
Murphy. He came home when Heinie Wagner bounced a single off Jack Coombs' glove.
There was a lot of concern on a play that Larry Gardner made in his return
from being injured. Jimmy Walsh came up and lifted a high fall fly off
third-base. Gardner, chased down the ball, which to wind gradually swept close
to the concrete bleacher fence. Just as Larry reached for the ball, it took a
sudden turn for the seats. Gardner, without paying any attention to the shouts
of his teammates to let the ball go, lunged forward and grabbed the ball just as
his legs hit the wall.
There was a wild rush by both teams to see of Larry was hurt, but he came up
smiling, holding the ball in his hands for the out. It was a great play but
possibly a very foolishly one with the World Series about to start. |
