THE SOX CAN'T STAY HEALTHY NOR HAPPY ...
Joe Wood and Duffy Lewis pace the Sox
to the first victory of the season

April 14, 1913 ... The New York Yankees forced the champion Red Sox to the end, before Duffy Lewis smashed the ball to right-center, good for two bases, scoring Joe Wood from third and Tris Speaker from first with the only runs that the Speed Boys were able to turn in, winning the game 2 to 1.

New York scored their runs in the first inning and held the advantage up to the eighth-inning. The Red Sox were breaking into the game in nearly every inning, only to find your hard drives taken care of by the New York outfield. It started to look like Ray Caldwell would be able to put one over the world champions. The Yankees were putting up a very superb game of baseball, and their every move made it clear that they were working as a team. While Caldwell pitched in intelligent game and used his wide crossfire curve to good advantage, it was the splendid fielding of his outfielders that saved game for him up until the eighth inning.

Of the six fly balls taken by the New York outfield, four were on long hard drives and one by Duffy Lewis, with a man on base in the sixth inning, was nipped by Birdie Cree near the banking in left field.

Joe Wood has seldom pitched a finer game. The four hits made off him were scattered through as many innings, and after the fifth inning, the New Yorkers went down in order, as they also did in the second and fourth. Both pitchers had perfect command. Not a base on balls was given until the eighth inning, when Speaker was passed intentionally.

Larry Gardner did some great fielding at third, going halfway to second base for two grounders. All of the Boston infield worked in superb form, giving Joe excellent support. Only one fly ball went to the outfield, showing that Joe had his ball sinking. Joe felt great pleasure in winning Boston's first victory of the season, and all were optimistic that this might be the start to a second pennant.

New York scored in the first inning when Bert Daniels hit a single over first base and stole second, when Les Nunamaker threw the ball into the ground. Harry Wolter hit one back to Wood, who tried to get Daniels unsuccessfully at third base. Steve Yerkes then made a brilliant assist on Roy Hartzell's grounder that allowed Daniels to score New York's first and only run.

In the eighth-inning, Wood led off and hit the ball to right for two bases, as Daniels, in trying for a shoestring catch, let the ball get past him. Harry Hooper fouled off three or four balls and then hit one back to Ray Caldwell who tossed to first, allowing Joe to get the third. With Tris Speaker up, a meeting at the mound was called and it was decided to intentionally put him on first base. Duffy Lewis came up and was in for two strikes and three balls, taking too good healthy swings. Speaker, who had hung close to first base, now took off as Caldwell served Duffy a curve ball that he smashed between right and center field. Wood jogged home, and Speaker had turned second before the ball hit the ground, scored another run to give Boston the lead and the game by a score of 2 to 1.
