THE SOX CAN'T STAY HEALTHY NOR HAPPY ...
Tris Speaker comes through with a 9th inning walk-off

August 7, 1913 ... In a free hitting game at Fenway Park today, the Red Sox beat the St. Louis Browns by a score of 9 to 8. Fred Anderson started the game for the Red Sox and for four innings did splendid work, holding the Browns to one hit.

In the sixth inning Anderson weakened and gave up two singles and a double for two runs that brought St. Louis within two runs of the Red Sox. The Speed Boys also scored two runs in the inning, aided by some weak fielding and, with the score 7 to 3, it looked as though Mr. Anderson would finish in good shape.

But in the seventh inning a double and a single by the first two men up decided his fate and he was taken out for Charley Hall. Hall got the first man out and then passed three men in succession forcing two over the plate. Dutch Leonard replaced Hall and was hit for two singles and three runs, giving St. Louis a 8 to 7 advantage.

The Sox tied the score in the bottom of the inning on Harry Hooper's double and a single by Duffy Lewis, then won the game in the bottom of the ninth when Clyde Engel drew a pass, stole second base on the first ball pitched, and scored on Tris Speaker's long drive into the right-field corner for a 9-8 walk-off victory.

The Red Sox cracked out 14 safe hits, with Tris Speaker leading with three singles in four times up. The Browns put up a great game and if shown here this season that both at bat and in the field they forced the Red Sox at every point. This one also was a real fight from the start and properly closed in a dramatic fashion.

Fred Anderson's pitching was good enough to show that the youngster is worthy of a place on the Red Sox pitching staff. They gave him all the encouragement possible and he was also backed by the fans who applauded the young Brockton boy continuously.

Dutch Leonard started rather poorly but pulled himself together and for the last two innings dominated his opponents swung wildly at his fastball. Leonard has become one of the mainstays of the pitching staff.
