THE SOX CAN'T STAY HEALTHY NOR HAPPY ...
Earl Moseley shuts out the Yankees in the first game
and it's Duffy Lewis knocking in Harry Hooper with
a walk-off in the second game

September 1, 1913 ... The New York Yankees were the entertainment for the Speed Boys at Fenway Park today, by losing both games of a doubleheader, 6 to 0 and 4 to 3. The day was perfect for baseball and while the morning crowd saw a little to get enthusiastic over, the spectators in the afternoon game were given a large number of thrills from start to finish.

The first game was a walk-over, as Earl Moseley held the visitors to one hit for the first six innings and four scattered hits overall. He was wild however in the first two innings and the Yankees ran the bases off Hick Cady. But the Sox worked out of holes and were never in trouble after the second inning. The Sox scored first as Yankee pitcher Al Schulz started by giving Harry Hooper of free pass and scored on Tris Speaker's single to left field.

The Sox added two more runs in the second inning on singles in succession, by Larry Gardner, Steve Yerkes and Hick Cady. In the third inning, Speaker reached on a dropped fly ball by John Knight, then stole second base and kept on going to third when Sweeney's throw went into center field. He scored when the ball got away from Harry Wolter, making it 4 to 0. The Sox added two more in the fifth on Speaker's triple, a double by Lewis and a single by Yerkes, which Birdie Cree allowed to go between his legs, for the 6-0 final score.

In the afternoon game, the Yankees came back strong and almost won the game. Veteran Russ Ford pitched for the Yankees, and at times displayed some of his old time form. Ray Collins started for Boston, but after the first two innings, started to lose his effectiveness, with only three days rest. He lasted seven innings and left with the score tied, 3-3.

EARL MOSELEY

The Sox scored two runs off Ford in the second inning on some sweet hitting. A single by Larry Gardner, a triple by Heinie Wagner, and a single by Bill Carrigan netted the Sox two runs. The Yankees gained back one run in the third, but the Sox got that one back with a run in the bottom of the third. Tris Speaker scored on a single and then stole second base. He scored when Yankee catcher, Jeff Sweeney threw the ball into center field on the steal.

The Yankees scored their second run in the fourth and then tied the score in the sixth on a base hit and Ford's fine three base hit. Charley Hall came into pitch and with one out in filled the bases on free passes. Dutch Leonard quickly came to the rescue and struck out the next two men, to the ringing applause of the crowd. Ford had buckled down and was now pitching great baseball and it simply became a case of who would score first. Bill Carrigan made a strong bid in the eighth inning when he led off with a double, but was nipped on his way to third, when Ford made a great play on Dutch Leonard's bunt.

In the 11th inning the Red Sox won it. Harry Hooper opened up with a single and Clyde Engel put down a perfect sacrifice bunt to send Harry to second base. Ford decided to pass Speaker and face Duffy Lewis. The first ball Duffy liked and drove it against the left field fence for a walkoff win, scoring Hooper.
