THE SOX CAN'T STAY HEALTHY NOR HAPPY ...
The Red Sox give the game away,
but Speaker takes it back in the ninth

September 16, 1913 ... The Boston Speed Boys were forced to the last hurdle today at Fenway Park, before landing a win over the St. Louis Browns by a score of 5 to 4. It was the Sox 18th victory out of their last 24 games played.

The Sox played a great game except for the battery work of Hugh Bedient and catcher Pinch Thomas. Bedient lacked control and was hit hard a number of times. In five innings, he passed the first man up, putting himself in a hole and forcing his teammates to do bail him out with good fielding. Thomas had three passed balls, two very wild throws and a dropped ball of a play at the plate, when Gus Williams tied the score by stealing home. However for the Browns, Wiley Taylor was also wild, passing six men, three of whom scored.

The Boston infield did some very good work. Heinie Wagner once more showed what a great glove man he is at shortstop. The Red Sox infield continually played on their toes. Best example is in the ninth-inning, when with the score tied, Bert Shotton laced the ball past Harry Hooper for three bases to start things off. The infield moved in and Jimmy Austin hit a ball to Heinie Wagner, who returned Shotton back to third and threw his man out of first. Next up, Del Pratt hit a grounder to Steve Yerkes, who fired it to the plate and Hick Cady, who cleverly blocked Shotton and got him for the second out. The inning ended when Tilly Walker stung the ball and a dead line to Duffy Lewis in left who took it at the edge of the bank as he was jumping in the air.

The Browns started by scoring two runs in the first inning. Shotton opened the game with a triple to right scored on Austin's single. Austin took second on a passed ball and scored on Pratt's double to give St. Louis a quick 2-0 lead.

The Sox got one back on a free pass to Harry Hooper, Speaker's sacrifice and a wild throw by shortstop, Mike Balenti. Then the Sox took the lead in the third inning when, with two outs, Clyde Engle's singled and scored on Speaker's double against the left-field fence. Duffy Lewis scored Speaker with the go-ahead run on a single to center, making it 3-2.

However, the Red Sox gave the Browns the run back in the next inning. Balenti was hit by a pitch and went to second on a passed ball, scoring on Agnew's single to left, tying the game. In the sixth inning the Red Sox grabbed the lead back. Larry Gardner drove a triple to right and scored on a suicide squeeze executed by Steve Yerkes.

The Red Sox allowed the Browns back in the game again in the eighth-inning. Gus Williams drew a pass and went to third on to ground ball outs. Then came an old play which has been worked the death this season against the Boston pitchers. Williams stole home as Thomas dropped the badly pitch ball after Williams ran into him.

Going into the ninth-inning the score was tied at 4 to 4. After the Browns went out in the top of the inning, Harry Hooper worked Taylor for a walk. Then on a hit and run, Hooper started for second and pulled Balenti away from the shortstop position, killing his chance of stopping Clyde Engle's base hit. Now there was a man at first and second with Tris Speaker coming up to the plate. Tris swung away at the first two balls, fouling them off. He then allowed to high ones to go by. The fifth one he sent to left-center, scoring Hooper with the winning run.
