THE BABE ARRIVES ...
Walter Johnson out-pitches Rankin Johnson,
1-0 in the first game, and the Red Sox rally
in the 10th to get a split

May 29, 1914 ... In a doubleheader at Fenway Park it was a battle of the Johnsons in the first game, that Walter managed to pull out with a 1-0 victory over Rankin. The Senators scored their run in the seventh inning, when with two down and a man on second, Clyde Millan lifted a long fly ball that dropped just inside the right-field line.

Except for Del Gainor, who hit for a single and a double in three times up, no other Red Sox players were able to reach base. The fielding plays in the opener were good and lively, with Harry Hooper, Larry Gardner and Everett Scott being the standouts for the Red Sox.

The second game was quite different, as first one team took the lead and the other battling back, with the Red Sox coming all the way for a winning finish in the 10th inning, by a score of 6 to 5. Dutch Leonard started for the Red Sox and Joe Boehling for the Nationals and it looked like it would be a great game between two of the league's top left-handed pitchers.

Washington got off to an immediate two run lead in the first inning as a result of singles by Milan and Chick Gandil, a muffed fly ball by Harry Hooper and a wild throw to first by Leonard, trying to pick off Milan. Leonard pulled himself together, settled down and pitched good ball until he was taken out for a pinch-hitter in the fourth inning. It was a move manager Carrigan had to make, as there was one man out and two men on at the time. Wally Rehg was chosen to be the pinch-hitter and the move paid off, as Wally hit a long ball to the centerfield fence for three bases and scoring the two men, giving Boston the lead by a score of 3 to 2.

Rube Foster then took up the burden in the fifth inning, and with two down was found for a walk and a triple that was good for one run to tie the score. The Red Sox took the lead again on a pass to Tris Speaker and Larry Gardner's double that made it 4 to 3 after five innings.

In the eighth-inning, Danny Moeller and Kid Foster led off with base hits. Carrigan changed pitchers again, this time sending in Ray Collins. The first batter got a scratch single to fill the bases. Then Collins got the next three men on fly balls, however Moeller scored on the sacrifice fly, as Carrigan dropped the ball after a collision at home. That tied the score at 4 to 4 as the game then would go to extra innings.

In the top of the 10th, Washington scored a run on a single by Foster and a fine double by Shanks, after Gandil had been walked. In the bottom of the 10th inning both Carrigan and pinch hitter Clyde Engle worked Boehling for passes. Then with two outs, Everett Scott smashed a single to left and it was a great race for a home between Olaf Henriksen, who was pinch running for Carrigan and a beautifully thrown ball by Shanks. Olaf was safe and the score was tied.

Doc Ayers now came into pitch for Washington and Duffy Lewis hit a slow ground ball down to George McBride the shortstop, who threw quickly to first base, as Gandil pulled his foot off the bag, allowing Engle to come in with the winning run. Clark Griffith stormed onto the field to confront umpire Sheridan, but the games was over and the crowd came out of the stands to celebrate.
