DUTCH LEONARD

THE BABE ARRIVES ...
Dutch Leonard pitches masterful ball and
Joe Wood guts it out for a doubleheader sweep

August 20, 1914 ... By playing super all around baseball, the Speed Boys of Boston won both games of a doubleheader from the Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park to the enjoyment of more than 13,000 fans. The opener went to the Red Sox by a score of 3 to 1, with Dutch Leonard and Joe Benz pitching for the honors. The margin in the second game was a shade better with the score being 4 to 1, with Joe Wood pitching against Jim Scott.

The Red Sox played smooth and fast baseball. The fielding was grand with doubleplays by Hal Janvrin, Everett Scott and Dick Hoblitzell doing much to save Joe Wood, who was far from the real "Smoky Joe". In fact, he was hit freely, but received grand support in the field and at bat by his teammates.

Dutch Leonard was wild at the start, but braced up and became invincible. He also was very strong at bat and helped himself with timely hits.

Wood was given a warm welcome when he went to the mound, and although not as effective as in the past, he was there in the pinches and played his position flawlessly. The visitors scored one run each game at the start and then proceeded to fall victims of the Red Sox sharp ball playing. Harry Hooper came across with two timely hits that gave both victories to the home team. Leonard did some fine hitting in the first game, while Everett Scott and Tris Speaker got in key singles in the second game.

The crowd was large and an agreeable surprise to the clubs, and the routing for the Boston Braves when the scores were posted was a lively feature of the afternoon.

The White Sox scored in the first inning in the first game, but the Red Sox came back in the third inning to make the score 2-1 in Boston's favor. Dick Hoblitzell started the inning with a single and then stole second base. Bill Carrigan walked and Dutch followed with a single to fill the bases. Harry Hooper's single scored the two Boston runs. The Red Sox added one more run in the seventh inning. "Hobby" again singled, went to second on Carrigan's ground out and scored on Dutch's base hit.

The second game started off much the same as the first with Chicago drawing first blood. The Red Sox scored two in the third inning again to take another 2-1 lead. "Hobby" led off with a base hit and Hick Cady reached on an error by Lena Blackburne, the secondbaseman. Harry Hooper again singled in both runners.

In the fourth, the White Sox hit Joe Wood for a single and a double, but he reached back and left the men stranded on base. He also got out of a hole in the fifth inning with men at first and third by serving up a doubleplay ground ball.

In the sixth inning the Red Sox added two more runs on singles by Everett Scott and Hooper, who moved up on Duffy Lewis' sacrifice bunt, and then Larry Gardner lined the ball to the centerfield fence for a triple. Gardner was later victimized on an unsuccessful squeeze play at home. Gardner never made a move off third-base until the ball was hit and was a dead duck. The White Sox had one more chance when they fill the bases in the eighth inning on two passes and a hit with two outs, but Joe got the pinch-hitter Tom Daly ground out.

Harry Hooper was the star of the afternoon and the big crowd in the bleachers showed him their appreciation with the cheers he received when he took his position in right field.
