“DIARY OF A WINNER”

RIP WILLIAMS

WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
Rip Williams wins one for Walter Johnson

April 19, 1915 ... A rally in the sixth and eighth innings, gave Washington the decision over the Red Sox in a hard fought battle today by a score of 4 to 2. After getting away to a good start with a lead of two runs, the Red Sox were nosed out at the wire by the timely hitting of Rip Williams. The Washington firstbaseman drove in all of Washington's runs and got three hits for the afternoon, one of which was a triple in the eighth-inning, to give the Nats their victory.

The Red Sox grabbed the first run of the game in the first inning. Harry Hooper smashed a double to right and moved up when Heinie Wagner's sacrifice bunt was fumbled by Johnson. With runners at first and third, Speaker sent a long fly ball to center that scored Hooper as he beat the ball to the plate by a thin margin.

Red Sox second run came in the fifth inning when Hal Janvrin hit a ground ball to George McBride at shortstop, whose throw was wide of the bag at first pulling Williams off. Janvrin however was thrown out trying to steal second base. Carl Mays smashed one to left-field for a base hit and came home on Hooper's double down the third-base line, to give the Red Sox a 2 to 0 lead.

Carl Mays started out for the Sox in fine shape and until the sixth inning pitch very well. In the first five innings the best Washington could do was to get three hits, but in the sixth he weakened and after one was out, two singles and a double gave Washington two runs that tied the score. Kid Foster hit one down to Heinie Wagner at second, that seem to eat him up and went for a base hit. Clyde Milan then sent a screamer along the left-field foul line for two bases that moved Foster over to third. Williams came through the beautiful hit to right that scored both the runners to tie up the game.

Bill Carrigan then brought in Ray Collins in the seventh and he retired the side 1-2-3. But the eighth-inning proved a hard one for the Boston pitcher, as two outs, a scratch single and a triple gave Washington two runs. Walter Johnson lined one to shortstop that Everett Scott was able to stop but could not scoop it up in time to make the throw. Merito Acosta, who had taken over for Moeller in right field, hit a hard grounder down to Hal Janvrin at third, but he muffed the ball and all runners were safe. Foster then lined one back to down to Janvrin, who stopped the ball nicely, but threw poorly the first to load the bases. Clyde Milan weekly hit one back to Collins and Ray threw it to Carrigan and home, who in turn threw it to Hoblitzell at first to complete a doubleplay. There were now two out with runners at second and third when Williams smashed one way out to left-center, almost rolling to the fence. Both runners scored and Washington now had the lead 4 to 2.

Walter Johnson held the Red Sox to six hits and struck out five. He seemed to get better as the game progressed with only one single in off him in the last four innings. In the field, the game was loosely played with five errors committed by the two teams.

The Red Sox had a chance to score in the ninth when Tris Speaker opened up with a double to left, but a pop to short by Duffy Lewis and Dick Hoblitzell's fly to center, along with a strikeout by Olaf Henriksen, who batted for Everett Scott, shattered whatever hopes the Sox had of tying the score. Three of the Red Sox six hits were doubles. Hooper got one in his first appearance at the plate, which resulted in a run and another in the fifth when he scored Mays. The other double was hit by speaker in the ninth.

Joe Moeller and Williams got five of the eight hits by Washington. Moeller got a single and a double and Williams had a triple and two singles.
