“DIARY OF A WINNER”

WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN April 21, 1915 ... Good bad and indifferent baseball marked today's game between the Red Sox in the Senators with the Nats winning 11 to 3. Ray Collins was wild and ineffective and made matters worse by making an error. The entire Boston infield seemed to go to pieces. The Sox were charged with five errors, most of which were costly. In the third inning, Washington got five runs on Collins, but only on three hits. After two men were walked, Howie Shanks line a ball that struck the second base bag and bounded up in the air, so nobody was able to score. Kid Foster then hit a dribbler in front of the plate and Collins fumbled the ball, allowing McBride to score the first run. Rip Williams lined to left-field to score Shanks and Boehling, sending Foster to third and Williams to second on the throw to the plate. Collins then walked Chick Gandil to load the bases. Henri Rondeau dropped a Texas Leaguer into right that scored Foster and Williams, to make it 5 to 0. Then in the fourth inning four more runs were scored. McBride walked and Shanks singled to center. Carrigan tried to pick off Shanks at first and the ball get by Hoblitzell and rolled to the fence. Umpire Evans allowed two bases on the overthrow so McBride scored and Shanks went to third. Foster hit a ball to Heinie Wagner, who fumbled it and was safe at first, while Shanks scored. Milan singled to center and then Foster stole third. Williams hit a sacrifice fly to deep left that scored him. Duffy Lewis made a beautiful catch and a nice throw to second to try and double up Milan, but Wagner dropped the throw. Milan scored when Gandil tripled to left. Chick was thrown out at the plate trying to stretch it into a home run on a perfect relay from Lewis to Speaker to Carrigan. Boston got two runs back in the sixth. Speaker singled to right. Then Duffy Lewis hit a line drive to center. Milan misjudged it and the ball went by him as Duffy circled the bases for a home run. Collins was taken out and Ralph Comstock came into pitch the seventh inning. The first man to face him was Milan who homered to deep right field. Comstock then dropped Gainer's throw to first on a ground ball by Williams allowing him to get on. Chick Gandil then doubled to left to move Williams over to third and Everett Scott booted Rondeau's grounder, permitting Williams and Gandil to score with two more runs, making it 11 to 2. In the eighth-inning McNally beat out a hit to start things off. After Speaker popped up and Lewis grounded out, McNally was able to move up to second. He scored on Del Gainor's triple to deep left for the third and final Red Sox run. |
