HOOKS DAUSS |
WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
The Sox
are unable to beat
the unbeaten Hooks Dauss
May 11, 1915
...
The Detroit Tigers beat the Sox in the opening game of their trip to
Detroit, by a 5 to 1 score, with the Red Sox not being able to get
any more than four safe base hits off the unbeaten Hooks Dauss. The
Tigers got their hits however, in bunches off Babe Ruth, who walked
three men in the sixth inning to force in a run. Duffy Lewis with
his quickness and ability to leap in the air, kept the Tigers from scoring on
four different occasions. One happened in the sixth inning with the bases loaded
and two outs, when Marty Kavanaugh hit one over Duffy's head that he was able to
catch up to and flag down for an out. Carl Mays pitched the end of the game and
did well, giving up only one hit.
The Tigers got busy in the first inning by scoring a run when Donie Bush
singled and eventually scored on a base hit by Ty Cobb. In the third inning Bush
started more trouble when he connected for his second hit, but was forced at
second by Oscar Vitt. Vitt took third on Cobb's second hit and scored on Sam
Crawford's infield single.
Two more Tigers scored in the fifth inning on two hits and an error, and they
got one in the sixth when Ruth loaded the bases and forced Bobby Veach home when
he walked Dauss. It was there that Mays came in, in relief, and Lewis pulled
down the drive at the fence by Kavanaugh with the bases full.
The Sox got their first hit in the fourth inning on a base hit by Lewis, a
triple over Cobb's head that bounded back off the wall almost to second base. It
went for naught however, as the following Sox batters could not get him in.
The Red Sox were not able to score until the fifth inning, when they got
there one and only run. Everett Scott opened it up with a hot single to center
and after two-out, the Babe hit a double off the scoreboard to score Scotty. |
