“DIARY OF A WINNER”

WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
The White Sox knock around
Babe Ruth and Ray Collins

May 22, 1915 ... The Red Sox pitchers were bombarded by the White Sox and Chicago took the second game of the series by a score of 11 to 3. Babe Ruth started the game for the Red Sox, but was knocked out of the game in the second inning after Chicago sent home four runs in the first inning.

After Happy Felsch and Braggo Roth singled in the second, Ray Collins came into pitch and was touched for 10 hits in his seven innings of work. The White Sox were credited with 15 hits for a total of 21 bases. The Red Sox got to Joe Benz for 11 base hits, three of which came in the ninth-inning.

Benz, although giving up 11 hits, was the master of the Red Sox at all times during the game, while his teammates seemed to slam base hits off Ruth and Collins almost at will.

Babe Ruth had a terrible time coping with White Sox hitters who faced him in the opening inning. A pass to Felsch started his downfall. Hap made it to second when Babe threw wildly, after grabbing a ground ball hit back to him. Eddie Collins laid down a bunt to score Felsch with the first run. Babe then walked Jack Fournier and Jimmy Collins beat out a hit back at the mound, to put runners at first and third. Buck Weaver's single, a wild pitch and a base hit by Bunny Brief, brought in an additional three runs.

The White Sox got another run in the second inning on hits by Felsch and Roth that knocked out Ruth. Ray Collins came in and Eddie Collins slammed a single that scored the fifth run for Chicago.

Ray Collins made it through the third but then was slammed in the fourth inning, when the White Sox tallied five more runs. In the top of the fifth now down 10 to 0, Heinie Wagner knocked out a base hit and scored on Tris speaker's double. The White Sox countered that run with one of their own in the seventh.

Roth's error put Del Gainer at first base in the ninth. He scored on Mike McNally's triple, who later scored on a base hit by Speaker, for the last two Red Sox runs.

The victory sent the White Sox to the top of the American League, while the St. Louis Browns were beating the New York Yankees.
