“DIARY OF A WINNER”

TRIS SPEAKER

WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
The Red Sox sweep the Athletics

May 31, 1915 ... The Red Sox enjoyed a prosperous inning in each of the games today to win both games of a doubleheader, the first game by a 2 to 1 score, and the second game, 9 to 2.  The Red Sox have now won four of their last five games.  In the morning it was Rube Foster who allowed nine hits, but except for one inning, was better than all the batters he faced.

Foster was nicked for nine hits, but except for a lapse in the eighth inning, he pitched a fine game. A great play by Tris Speaker saved the day for Foster in the eighth-inning. Joe Bush also pitched a great game for Philadelphia, but the Sox scored the necessary runs in the seventh inning that netted their two runs.

The Sox opened up on Bush in the first inning. Hooper started with a single but was cut down trying to steal. He was followed by Speaker, who doubled, but Bush was able to get out of that jam. He pitched himself out of another jam in the sixth when he walked Heinie Wagner and Speaker lined a single. The two runners advanced on a passed ball, but then Bush struck out both Duffy Lewis and Dick Hoblitzell, and finally getting Everett Scott on an infield grounder.

In the seventh inning the Red Sox came right back at Bush and won the game. Larry Gardner walked and Pinch Thomas singled. Foster move them along with a sacrifice and Hooper's long sacrifice fly, enabled Gardner to score. Wagner then doubled in Thomas to give the Sox a 2 to 0 lead.

The Athletics were making it difficult in the eighth inning, when Speaker made an accurate throw to Everett Scott on a base hit, that cut off the rally and prevented them from winning it right there. Shag Thompson, who had batted for Bush to open the inning, was on second and Jimmy Walsh was on first with one out. Jack Lapp drove one over Scott's head that ordinarily would have meant a run, but Tris fielded the ball so quickly that Thompson was held at third. Walsh made it to second on the play, but overran the bag and before he could get back, Speaker threw a bullet to Scott, who tossed it over to Wagner and easily caught Walsh off the bag by a couple of feet.

For the first six innings of the afternoon game, it was then nip and tuck battle. The Red Sox started getting two runs in the very first inning. With one out, Wagner singled to left and moved to third when Speaker lined a double down the left-field line. Lewis brought both runners in with a line drive that went between Rube Oldring and Jimmy Walsh for a double. After Hoblitzell flew out, Everett Scott beat out a hit. Both Lewis and Scott then attempted a double steal, but Ryan's quick relay to McAvoy at the plate cut down Duffy.

Down 2 to 0, the A's got to Carl Mays and tied the score in their half of the inning. Eddie Murphy singled and scored on Walsh's triple to right. He scored on Rube Oldring's fly ball to Lewis. After that Mays settled down and the Athletics were not able to score off him again. Henriksen did pinch hit for Mays in the seventh inning and Ray Collins finished the afternoon allowing one hit in his three innings of work.

In the seventh inning, Shawkey exploded. Larry Kopf started his trouble by fumbling a ground ball by Hobby. Scott got a base hit and then Shawkey threw Larry Gardner's sacrifice bunt to late to third, filling the bases with nobody out. He struck out Thomas, but manager Bill Carrigan brought in Olaf Henriksen to bat for Mays and he lifted a long fly ball that enabled Hoblitzell to score the go-ahead run.

Shawkey walked Hooper to load the bases again and Wagner singled to left, scoring Scott and Gardner. Hooper followed them with a mad dash for the plate and scored another run because the catcher, Wickey McAvoy, dropped Jack Barry's throw. Shawkey next unleashed a wild pitch that allowed Wagner to take second and he scored on Speaker's base hit. Speaker moved over to third on a base hit by Lewis and scored on Hoblitzell's single to right. With Lewis on third, Scott slammed his second hit of the inning, scoring Speaker and giving the Sox seven runs and a 9 to 2 lead.

The Red Sox hit Shawkey hard throughout the game, getting 14 hits for 16 bases. Speaker, Lewis, Wagner and Scott each had three hits in the game. For the day, Speaker got five hits with two doubles in nine times at bat.
