“DIARY OF A WINNER”
|
WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN June 14, 1915 ... Joe Wood looked great at Fenway Park today and held the Cleveland Indians down by a 4 to 1 score. He had good speed on his fastball and excellent command, passing only one man. Only Joe Jackson was able to solve his pitches and smashed out two singles and a triple in three times up. Willie Mitchell, who has bothered the Red Sox hitters considerably over the last two years, was on the mound for the Indians but this time was hit hard by Heinie Wagner, Hal Janvrin and Hick Cady. Wagner was out only the star the game with his bat. But carried off the honors in the field also. The Red Sox broke into the scoring column in the fourth inning. Duffy Lewis singled over second and Dick Hoblitzell lined a drive to right-field. Both runners moved up on Janvrin's ground out and Larry Gardner blooped a Texas Leaguer just past the reach of the shortstop, that rolled into foul ground, allowing both runners to score. Gardner ended up on second and scored the third run on a single by Cady. Cleveland was only able to score one run and that happened in the fifth inning. Jackson drove a savage line drive just out of the reach of Tris Speaker and it rolled to the bank for three bases. Jack Graney drove him in, but he was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double, by Olaf Henriksen. The Red Sox scored again in the sixth inning on a single by Janvrin, who promptly stole second and went to third on Steve O'Neill's wild throw into centerfield. He romped home easily on a single by Cady, putting the Sox up 4 to 1. In the seventh inning with two outs, Jackson again got to Wood with a base hit. In the ninth-inning with two down, Jackson came up once more and this time hit a fast ground ball that went through Wagner into right field. |
