“DIARY OF A WINNER”

TRIS SPEAKER

WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
Rube Foster and Tris Speaker beat the Browns

June 18, 1915 ... The Red Sox continued their winning streak, by taking their seventh straight game, as they defeated the St. Louis Browns 3 to 1 at Fenway Park. George Foster who was tough on the mound for the Red Sox and brilliant outfielding play by Tris Speaker were the big factors in today's win.

Earl Hamilton pitched for the Browns and was very effective for the most part, losing the game because of a wild streak in the fifth inning. It was really a pitcher's battle with both Foster and Hamilton throwing strong from start to finish, but Foster was just a little bit sharper.

Only one run was scored by the visitors and that was a result of a wide throw to first by Hal Janvrin with two outs in the opening inning. As a matter of fact the Browns played better ball in the infield then did the Red Sox, turning four doubleplays in the game.

Speaker made two superb running catches in center field, taking the ball from Ernie Walker close to the bank in left-center after a long run. And in the ninth Gus Williams drove the ball to deep right center and Speaker managed to grab the ball on the dead run over his head in right center.

The Red Sox tied the game in the second inning when Duffy Lewis hit the left-field fence for a double and scored after a single by Dick Hoblitzell and then a wild pitch, tying the game at one apiece.

The Sox took the lead for good in the fifth inning. Gardner started by drawing a pass and Cady sacrificed him over. Foster lined the ball against the left-field fence for two bases and the ball was hit so hard that Gardner had to hold at third. Then after Del Gainer popped out, Wagner drew a pass to fill the bases. That set up Speaker who smashed a line drive to right-center, scoring both Gardner and Foster.

With one out in the sixth, Walker drove the ball to right-center in the gap and went for three bases. But Foster tightened up and struck out John Leary and got Doc Lavan to pop up to Janvrin, stranding the runner at third.

Then in the eighth-inning, after the Browns loaded the bases on two free passes, Sam Agnew hit a simple bouncer back to the mound and Foster again got himself out of the danger zone.

In the ninth-inning, Gus Williams hit the line drive that Speaker made the great running catch on, followed by Shotton grounding out and Foster striking out Ivan Howard to end the game.

The win moved the Red Sox into second place ahead of the Tigers, as Boston has now won 16 of their last 20 games. Speaker by driving in the two winning runs and making the two great catches, was the star of the game.
