“DIARY OF A WINNER”

JOE WOOD

WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
The Red Sox lose the first game but
win the second game behind Joe Wood

July 3, 1915 ... After the severe rains of the last two days, the Red Sox and Athletics broke even in a doubleheader this afternoon at Fenway Park. The A's won the opener by a score of 7 to 3 with Ray Collins an easy mark for the visitors and Cap Crowell showing excellent form for Philly. In the second game the Sox had all the runs scoring almost as they liked, on three Athletics pitchers. Joe Wood won his eighth game and for six innings had little trouble in disposing the opponents. Vean Gregg finished up for him with a clean slate. The final score in the second game was 11 to 0.

The games were long and drawn out and poorly play because the infield was soft and slippery, making it almost impossible for the infielders to keep their feet. Many grounders went for base hits as a result of infielder slipping down after stopping the ball. When the time had come for starting the first game however, the sun was out and the outfield was in fairly good shape for the crowd of nearly 12,000 who were on hand.

Dutch Leonard came in and relieved Ray Collins in the first game with the bases full in the eighth-inning and got off by only giving up one run. He pitched very well to the great pleasure of the fans on hand.

In the first contest, Danny Murphy opened up with a double and scored on singles by Otis Strunk and Wally Schang. The Red Sox came back and scored two more runs in the second. Dick Hoblitzell got a pass and was followed by Duffy Lewis, who lined a single sending Hobby over to third. Duffy stole second base and a single by Thomas scored the two runners.

After the Athletics tied it up in the fourth inning, they scored three more runs in the seventh. Crowell singled and then Murphy and Strunk both got base hits. Schang smashed the ball off the left-field fence for a double and three more runs were in. The A's scored two more in the eighth to give them a 7 to 2 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth Olaf Henriksen went to bat for Pinch Thomas and drew a pass. Babe Ruth batted for Dutch Leonard and popped out and was followed by Hooper grounding out the first. Bill Rodgers hit for Heinie Wagner, drew a base on balls and then Tris Speaker had his ground ball fumbled by Nap Lajoie, allowing Hendrickson to score the final Red Sox run.

After a rest both teams came out to play game number two. Joe Wood received a fine ovation and apparently was an first class shape, keeping the Athletics well in hand. The Red Sox sent two runs over in the second inning and then five in the third. In that inning, Duffy Lewis singled and Larry Gardner drew a pass. They both scored when Hick Cady lined the ball off the left-field fence. Weldon Wyckoff was on the mound for Philly at the time and then was replaced by Bruno Haas. Haas had no control and issued four straight walks. Everybody scored on singles by Hal Janvrin, Larry Gardner and Cady, putting the Sox up 7-0.

Then in the fourth Wood singled moved to second on a ground ball out, and scored on Heinie Wagner's line drive single to left. Torn Knowlson replaced Haas and kept the Red Sox in check for two innings. But in the seventh the Sox picked up three more runs on singles by Speaker, Hoblitzell, Janvrin and Lewis.

Jack Barry came into the lineup in this inning and received a warm welcome from the fans. Wood then gave way to Gregg, who was rather wild and certain, but managed to keep himself under control, allowing the visitors only two singles over the last three innings. The final score was the Red Sox 11, Philly 0.
