WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
Errors cost the Red Sox at Detroit

The Tigers managed to win after an uphill struggle with the Red Sox at Navin Field. Ernie Shore had great speed, in starting the game, but he was wild. Carl Mays, who took over for him in the sixth inning, was unfortunate enough to groove a ball to Sam
Crawford. He had three hits including a double and a triple. The other big factor was Ty Cobb, who only managed on base hit, but was on base four out of the five times he came to bat, and scored three of Detroit's runs. The Sox jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth
inning. With two on base, Duffy Lewis doubled them in and then scored himself on Larry Gardner's double. By the seventh inning the Tigers had tied the score at 4-4. Then came the bottom of the ninth inning. With one out, Mays walked Marty Kavanaugh. Cobb hit a
grounder to Jack Barry who tossed to Hal Janvrin in a doubleplay attempt, but Janvrin fumbled the toss. On the next pitch, Crawford lined the ball to right center and Kavanaugh scampered in with the winning run. |
