WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
Great plays help the Red Sox win
July 15, 1915
...
Great fielding by Jack Barry and Tris Speaker along with Speaker's good hitting and that of Larry Gardner, saved the day for Ernie Shore. A leaping one handed catch by Barry with the bases full saved it in the sixth inning was one save. Speaker made two
incredible running catches and Del Gainor made a great stop of a smash for the third out with men on second and third. In fact the Indians had the Sox on their toes right down to the last out. For five innings the game stayed scoreless.
The Sox finally scored three big runs in the sixth inning. Speaker opened the inning with a sharp single. Del Gainor tried to bunt him along, but Casey Hagerman decided to go for Speaker at second and threw the ball away. Duffy Lewis then bunted and
was safe as nobody could decide who was supposed to pick up the ball. Larry Gardner knocked in two runs with a line drive off the right field fence but got caught off first base. Lewis finally scored on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze by Jack Barry. The Indians
bounced back for two more runs and they both exchanged runs in the eight, and Shore got the Indians in order to end the game in the ninth inning. |
