WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
The Red Sox wear down the Browns
July 23, 1915
...
The Red Sox led from the beginning and just kept adding on as the game progressed. Dutch Leonard started for the Sox and was pitching a so-so game until he was hit on the knee with a line drive that took him out of the game. With a 3-2 lead, Vean Gregg
came in proceeded to walk the bases loaded. Ray Collins was called on to save the day and he was up for the task, pulling the Sox out of a bad situation.
The Sox scored one run in the first inning to grab the lead. Tris Speaker walked, stole second, and romped home on a single by Dick Hoblitzell. The two teams traded runs in the third and again in the fifth. But then Boston put up runs that the
Browns couldn't match. In the sixth it was a double by Ray Collins and a double by Heinie Wagner. In the seventh it was a pass, a double by Duffy Lewis and singles by Bill Carrigan and Collins to produce two runs. In the eighth it was a pass to Speaker, who was knocked
in by Del Gainor. Ray Collins indeed did the job in stopping the Browns, not allowing one baserunner after the fifth inning. The Boston machine just worked smoothly and wore down St. Louis who fought hard until the end. |
