The Red Sox and Browns battled for eight innings before the game was halted due to a thunderstorm. A double-header was scheduled, but the wet field made starting the second game impossible. Rube Foster was on the hill for the Speed Boys
and threw an excellent game, coming through in the pinches. Tris Speaker, however, played the most important part of the victory, as he sent home the first run with a fine double, and scored the second run after leading off with another two-bagger. The first score came in the very
first inning. Harry Hooper worked a base on balls, went to second on a balk by St. Louis starter, Carl Weilman, and scored on Speaker's sharp double to the left field bank. Duffy Lewis then drove a sharp single to center and Speaker, with a head of steam, rounded third headed for
home. A remarkable throw by Tillie Walker nailed Speaker by at least a yard. It was one of the most perfect throws seen this season. In the sixth, Speaker led off with a double down the left field line, went to third on a sac bunt by Del Gainor, and scored on a short fly to
Walker in center. Walker's throw again beat him to the plate, but it short-hopped the catcher and bounded past him. When the visitors came to bat in the eighth it was raining quite heavy with lightning and thunder off to the west. Umpire Bobby Wallace stopped the game, and as
it was still raining half an hour later, the game ended. |
