RAY FISHER |
WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
Disastrous day for the Red Sox vs the Yankees
September 6, 1915
...
The New York Yankees swept a doubleheader from the Red Sox, by simply outplaying them. The visitors put up flawless fielding and hit the Sox pitchers easily, after they got men on base from errors. In the morning game Ray Fisher oupitched
Rube Foster, shutting out the Red Sox 4 to 0. Fisher let up three scattered hits and the Sox batters never posed a threat. The Sox fielders didn't use their heads as in two instances when Larry Gardner threw to second base on a ground ball to get the lead runner, and the
secondbaseman was late in getting to the bag. On the bright side Tris Speaker made two outstanding catches which would have allowed even more runs.
In the afternoon, the Red Sox scored two runs in the first inning, and after that were helpless against Ray Caldwell. Babe Ruth did fine work for the home team until the eighth inning when New York lit him up, scoring three runs on three successive hits.
Dutch Leonard relieved him and gave up two more runs in the ninth inning. The Sox batters failed to show any pop in either game, giving the visitors great confidence and allowing them to play even better. |
