DUTCH LEONARD |
WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
Dutch Leonard comes through
and beats the Detroit Tigers
September 17, 1915
...
Nearly 21,000 fans saw the Tigers go down early in the game at Fenway Park and ultimately lose to the Red Sox by a 7 to 2 score. Bill James was on the mound for Detroit and lost out because of his wildness and some nice hitting by Dick Hoblitzell and Dutch Leonard, who sent a liner to
the bank in left field, with the bases loaded in the third inning, putting the game on ice for the Red Sox. Leonard pitched a masterly game for eight innings. In that time Ossie Vitt was the only Tiger to get a base hit. But in the ninth inning, he became a bit careless,
hitting Vitt with a pitched ball. After that, Ty Cobb came up and got a little glory for himself, smacking one of Leonard's straight ones into the right field bleachers for the Tigers' only two runs.

SPEAKER SCORES |
The Red Sox jumped out to a quick start in the first inning with Harry Hooper working a walk and being sacrificed to second. Speaker then walked and Hobby smashed a single to right, scoring Hooper. They then scored two runs in the second inning
when, with two men on, Everett Scott hit a grounder to Ralph Young at second, who threw wild to second being anxious to complete a doubleplay, scoring Dutch Leonard and sending Hooper to third, who then scored on Speaker's ground out. The Sox got three more in the third on Leonard's line
drive smash with the bases full, and one last run in the fourth inning to give the Sox a 7-0 lead. It indeed was a big day for Dutch Leonard at the plate and on the mound. |
