THE LAST ONE FOR 86 YEARS
Carl Mays pitches a one-hitter,
as Sox win in the ninth inning
April 16, 1918 ...
A base hit by Joe Dugan, a solid smack toward right, with one out in the eighth, which Dave Shean valiantly attempted to get in front of, spoiled the night for Carl Mays. It was the one and only hit he allowed. However, to take the sting away, the
Sox broke a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game for him.
In the ninth inning, it was Everett Scott driving Stuffy McInnis, who had doubled to right, home with the winning run to give Mays a 1-0 win. Just three of the A's made it to first base, two of them on walks and the boys from Philadelphia were retired in
order from the third inning until the eighth. Mays fanned eight and demonstrated how a pitcher should pitch.
Opposing Mays was Scott Perry, who with the aid of splendid defense shutout the Red Sox until the final inning. Mary Pickford will be at the game today to promote the Fort Devens baseball fund. |
