GEORGE MOGRIDGE |
THE LAST ONE FOR 86 YEARS
The Yankees halt the Red Sox undefeated streak
April 22, 1918 ...
The Red Sox got battered by the heavy artillery of the New York Yankees at Fenway Park by an 11-4 score. The loss ended the Red Sox undefeated string of six games. The winner of the contest was the Red Sox nemesis, George Mogridge. He held
the Sox to eight hits and it not until the last inning that any of these hits scored. The Sox hit him in three innings and but for carelessness by Del Pratt and Mogridge himself, he might have shutout the Sox in the first inning. Frank Baker had a field day for the Yanks,
collecting four hits, two of which were doubles and a long sacrifice fly.
The Red Sox jumped out to a two run lead in the first inning. With one out Dave Shean singled on a ball that bounced off Baker's glove. Mogridge then hit Hobby with a pitch and Stuffy McInnis eased a slow grounder to Pratt who may a wild throw to
the plate. Mogridge slipped trying to field George Whiteman's dinky infield hit and Hobby scored giving the Sox a 2-0 lead. The Yankees scored seven runs in the third and fourth innings and three more in the seventh. Dutch Leonard and Sam Jones pitched for the Sox and
obviously got hammered. |
