THE LAST ONE FOR 86 YEARS
Strunk and McInnis turn the tide for the Sox
April 26, 1918 ...
Stuffy McInnis and Amos Strunk beat their old buddys from Philly today when they inserted themselves effectively into this game. The score was 2 to 1 in favor of the Red Sox.
In the fourth inning McInnis completed a doubleplay that could have had a run or two score if it was not completed. Merlin Kopp led off with a single and went for third on Larry Gardner's sacrifice. Dick Hoblitzell, after getting Gardner out, pegged the
ball to Stuffy, who had to leap to get the ball, and then threw himself in front of the sliding Kopp to get the second out. It was important because George Burns had scored previously and it stopped a big inning.
Strunk came through in the seventh, by breaking up Scott Perry's no-hitter with the first hit. He was sacrificed to second by Schang, stole third and scored on Perry's wild pitch, to tie up the game. Hobby then doubled, Everett Scott singled to
left and Hobby scored on Kopp's bobble. It was the run that won the game.
Dutch Leonard got the win, but was in trouble throughout the game. He wobbled in the seventh, but another doubleplay by McInnis and Hoblitzell got him out of that jam. |
