“DIARY OF A WINNER”

WALTER JOHNSON

THE LAST ONE FOR 86 YEARS
Walter Johnson beats the Sox

May 1, 1918 ... If not for the fourth inning, the contest between the Red Sox and Washington would have been far more interesting.  In that inning Carl Mays was lambasted for five runs.  Every Nationals player marched to the plate and took a shot at Mays.  The score was 5 to 0.

Walter Johnson was on the mound for Washington and allowed just four scattered hits, and it was Harry Hooper who banged out three of them.  Twice he died on third base.  Otis Strunk, Dave Shean, and Everett Scott made some great plays in the field
