“DIARY OF A WINNER”

SHANO COLLINS

THE LAST ONE FOR 86 YEARS
Chicago pastes Dutch Leonard

May 27, 1918 ... The Red Sox defeat was the only unpleasant feature of Red Cross day at Fenway Park, with Chicago banging through a 6 to 4 victory over the Red Sox, because they were able to paste the offerings of Dutch Leonard on the nose.

The Red Cross realized $5500. This sum representing the gross proceeds and collections taking by the young women members of the organization.  Governor McCall and other dignitaries were present, and but for the poor weather in the forecast, a much larger sum would have been realized.

Leonard did not have anything. He flirted with a slow ball occasionally.  A fast double-play pulled him out of trouble in the first inning, but in the third, seventh, and eighth innings, he was less fortunate. Dutch's pitching was way off the mark and but in only one game this season, has shown the real fancy line of goods that he carries.  Dutch twice had a two run lead to work on, but could not hold it.  His support was good and the team hit behind him, but the loss of the game can be ascribed solely to his inability to come across with good pitching.

George Whiteman had another good day. He drove in two of the Red Sox runs, and in the field played perfect ball. Once he raced up the cliff and speared one like Duffy Lewis.  He caught a foul fly on the dead run, off Byrd Lynn in the seventh and in the same frame nailed Nemo Liebold and threw Swede Risberg out at the plate.

Singles by Harry Hooper, Dave Shean and Otis Strunk, and George Whiteman's sacrifice fly gave the Sox a 2-0 lead in the first inning.  The fancy hitting had been done against Eddie Cicotte and he was replaced in the second inning by Frank Shellenback, a big right-hander.

The White Sox tied the game in the third when Liebold smacked a single right with one out.  Shano was walked, and a sacrifice by Eddie Collins advanced both runners. They scored one when Felsch slashed a single to center field. The Sox got a run back in the third with a pass to Dutch Leonard and hits by Hooper and Dave Sheen to load the bases.  Leonard was forced at the plate after Otis Strunk swatted one to Eddie Collins.  Hooper breezed in with a score after Whitey lifted a sac fly to Liebold.

With one out in the sixth inning, Stuffy McInnis singled and was forced out.  Fred Thomas stole second.  Scotty's double drove Thomas in, with a 4-2 lead.

Triples by Gandil and Risberg gave the White Sox one in the seventh inning, Gandil's hit dropping between McInnis, Harry Hooper and Dave Sheen.  An infield hit by Eddie Collins, an infield out by Happy Felsch, Buck Weavers double, and Gandil's single, gave Chicago two runs and the lead in the eighth inning.

Joe Bush came into pitch in the ninth, after the damage had been done, and a walk to Shellenback, and Shano's sacrifice fly, furnished another run for the White Sox, making the final score 6 to 4.

Babe and Mrs. Ruth watched the game from a box.  Many fans came over to shake his hand.
