“DIARY OF A WINNER”
|
THE LAST ONE FOR 86 YEARS July 12, 1918 ... The Chicago White Sox were given another lesson today on the art of baseball by Babe Ruth. The White Sox sent Joe Benz, one of their best pitchers, to face the Red Sox today at Fenway Park. Benz had a spitter and other things in his arsenal, but nothing could help them against the Babe. Two triples and a double was all that babe could do in four times up. On the other occasion, he smashed the ball to left-center, but right at Nemo Liebold. The Red Sox won the game 6 to 3, with the rain, putting an end to the festivities after seven innings. There were 4200 fans out to see Babe Ruth and the rest of the Red Sox, including several hundred sailors from the battleship Georgia, who brought along their band and whooped it up for Babe and everybody to hear. As usual every eye was on Babe. In the second inning he was the first batter up and ran a double to right. Eddie Murphy was playing deep for him and his plans were upset when the ball landed in front of him and got by him. In the fourth Babe crushed a long triple to left-center and went the full distance, because buck Weaver, who took a relay throw from Shano Collins, pegged wild to third. Babe's offering in the sixth, was a triple to the right-field corner that scored Amos Strunk. Sam Jones pitched for the Red Sox and was not as good his usual, but kept plugging away, just the same, getting out of several tight places because of sensational support. Harry Hooper and Everett Scott put across some great plays for him at the most opportune times. Everett Scott squeezed Babe over with the first run in the second inning. After doubling, a Babe stopped at third on George Whiteman sacrifice. The squeeze that Scotty engineered, with such a beauty that he beat it out for a hit. The Red Sox were in trouble in the fourth inning with the White Sox scoring two runs take the lead. With one out Eddie Collins it one down to Babe at first, but threw too quickly, as Sam Jones was going over to cover the bag, and the ball rolled into the dugout. Collins took second base, Swede Risberg walked and then Jones made a wild pitch. On top of that he hit Shano Collins to fill the bases. Buck Weaver singled to center scoring Collins and Risberg. The inning closed when Fred McMullin hit into a double play. Weaver' fumble, a sacrfice by Jones, and Hooper's single, gave the Sox a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning. In the sixth, they scored two on Otis Strunk's single, Ruth's triple, and Scotty single. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Dave Shean singled, stole second, and scored when Eddie Collins made a wild throw trying to trap him off third-base, to make the score 6 to 3. The Babe is carrying around numerous spike wounds. Jack Grainy and Sam Chapman of Cleveland, along with Shano Collins of the White Sox, unintentionally spiked him during the week. His knee and the calf of his right leg are all cut up. Utility infielder Walter Barbary holds the checker championship of Huntington Avenue. He has all the moves down to perfection. |
