“DIARY OF A WINNER”

GEORGE SISLER

THE LAST ONE FOR 86 YEARS
The Browns take the last game from the Sox

July 18, 1918 ...  The Browns won 6 to 3 at Fenway Park today, before hopping the train for New York. They found King Bader's offerings soft picking. The Kansan with the side-arm delivery had a torrid afternoon. St. Louis, slammed him for 11 blows, and during the last three innings. Bader put the first ball over the middle of the plate to frequently. The Browns were very alert and they gave his pitches a good ride. Bader was pitching his head off to win, but did not to seem able to get anywhere. Vince Molyneaux was brought in to pitch.

The Red Sox could not hit Dave Davenport. Usually they knock him around, but yesterday Davenport got some good breaks and tightened up after the second inning. Only one of the five blows the Red Sox collected, went out of the infield.

In the fifth inning, Bader, unintentionally hit George Sisler and before trotting to first, strutted out toward the mound and addressed some objections to the rookie pitcher. Manager Jimmy Burke and the others saw to it that a jam was averted, but thereafter the bleacherites gave Sisler a harassing persistently.

In the first inning the Sox received a tough break. Harry Hooper walked and was moved along on Dave Shean sacrifice. Amos Strunk hit a low liner to left, which Jack Tobin plucked up on the run, shooting it to second and doubling Harry Hooper, before he had a chance to even return and retrace his steps.

The Browns scored their first run in the second inning. Tobin, the first batter, laid a pretty bunt down the third base line and beat out the throw. Earl Smith singled and Hank Severeid's long fly out to Babe Ruth, scored him.

In the bottom of the inning, the Red Sox tied it up. The Babe was passed, and took second on Stuffy McInnis' hit by Jimmy Austin. Everett Scott bunted to Davenport, who elected to make the play at third. His throw was late and high, soaring over Fritz Maisel's head, but fortunately Tobin was backing him up, and no damage occurred. Sisler took Barbare's hopper, but threw wildly to the plate trying and force Ruth. Stuffy McInnis was then trapped off third, Severeid throwing down to Maisel, the squeeze being on, but Davenport had pitched out.

A pass to Wally Mayer and singles by Bader and Hooper, after two were out in the fourth, put the Sox out in front to 2-1.

In the fifth inning, the Browns batted around. Davenport pasted a double to left-center to start. Bader hit Sisler and Demmitt singled to center scoring Davenport with the tying run. On the play, Strunk tried for Sisler at third but was too late, Sisler scampering to the plate when Barbare threw wild to second, trying to get Demmitt, who was going on the throw. Tobin singled to right, but Harry Hooper's fine throw to home held Demmitt at third, as Tobin took second on the throw. Joe Gedeon and singled and scored Demmitt with the third run of the inning.

A walk to Dave Shean, a wild pitch, and a pair of infield outs, gave the Sox one run in the fifth.

With the score 4 to 3, favoring the Browns, Mizell was passed, and hits by Austin and Tobin gave them another run the sixth. In the eighth, a pass to Davenport, a sacrifice, and two infield outs pushed over their final run. The final score was Brown 6, the Red Sox 3.

There is a rumor that Ernie Shore will make the next Western trip, or part of it, with the Red Sox. Nobody wants to verify it, Ernie is getting his suitcase ready.

Pres. Frazee said yesterday that he made an offer for Happy Felsch of the White Sox, but Charlie Comiskey turned it down.

Red Bluhm worked out with the Sox yesterday, but the rumor is that he and Horace Ford are booked for the Jersey City team.
