BABE RUTH |
THE LAST ONE FOR 86 YEARS
The Babe takes care of things on the mound
August 8, 1918 ... The
Red Sox wound up the Detroit series with a 4 to 1 victory at Navin Field. The win was very welcome, because it meant sending the lead in the American League standings down to a dangerously narrow margin with a loss, as the season is drawing to an end.
The Sox got busy in the first inning. Tiger starter Bernie Boland was wild and it cost him three runs, and only a bad performance from Sox starter Babe Ruth would enable the Tigers to win. The lead that Ruth was provided with allowed him to let the hitter's hit the ball
and let his fielders take care of making the outs. He had plenty of stuff in reserve on the few occasions which Tiger hitters threatened to start trouble. The Tigers scored one run in the fifth inning, but the Sox canceled that out in the seventh.
The Indians beat Washington by an 8 to 4 score, so the Sox maintain their 3 1/2 game lead in the American League. |
