“DIARY OF A WINNER”

THE LAST ONE FOR 86 YEARS
The Sox finally beat Reb Russell

August 14, 1918 ...  Under a glaring sun at Fenway Park, the Red Sox trimmed Reb Russell for the first time in four meetings this season, by a score of 5 to 3. Russell and licked the Sox, trimming them twice in the last series at Chicago, and while the Red Sox whacked him for 12 blows today, he would not have had a tougher time winning, if the southpaw had been supported more substantially by some of his other teammates. Errors figured in the development of two of the Red Sox runs, and some of those hits that were registered off Russell should've been scored as outs, but for confusion in the White Sox defense.

Sam Jones pitched for the Sox and did well considering that he has been considered nonessential for nearly two weeks. Jones walked five batters and hit another. There were times when it looked rather dubious for him, but he succeeded in weathering the storm because of slick support by his infield.

Singles by Shano Collins and Dave Pinelli developed a run for the visitors in the second inning and in the following frame, Chicago counted again on a walk, a single and a sacrifice fly.

In the Red Sox half of the third they tied the score on a pass, Harry Hooper's triple to right, Dave Shean's single to left and Amos Strunk's sacrifice fly ball. In the sixth, the Red Sox scored three runs and took the lead for good. Hact Miller started by dropping a single behind third, and scored as Scotty slashed a triple to right field. He scored when Chick Gandil fumbled Collins' return throw.. Jack Coffey then took two bases on Nemo Liebold's error in left field. Hits by Sam Agnew and Jones, brought him the rest of the way.

In the eighth inning, the White Sox scored a run, and in that same frame the Red Sox had the bases loaded with nobody out, yet failed to score. The fact that they left ten men on base during this game, shows that there is still room for further improvement.

The Indians kept pace by defeating Yankees 7-2 at the Polo Grounds behind the good pitching of Jim Bagby, who also had three hits and drove in two runs. Joe Wood hit his fifth home run of the season. The Red Sox still maintain their two-game lead over Cleveland.
