AMOS STRUNK |
THE LAST ONE FOR 86 YEARS
The Sox quickly shut out Chicago
August 16, 1918 ...
It took the Red Sox just over one hour and 15 minutes to hang a 2-0 win in the final game of the series with the Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park. The time it took to play the game is the only thing that pleased the Chicago bunch because it permitted them to grab the 5:15 train for New York and
escaping a night in the sleepers.
Joe Bush held Chicago to only five hits, Buck Weaver, working as far around this third-base once, while only three got as far as second base. Eddie Cicotte performed for Chicago and some good solid hits in the first two innings off him, provided the Red Sox with enough
runs to win the game. Both pitchers were whacked hard, but most of the time the ball was hit directly at somebody. There was considerable first ball hitting with the players apparently being very eager to get it over with.
In the first inning. Harry Hooper singled to right, moved to second on a groundout and scored when Amos Strunk slugged a triple to deep center. Jack Coffey singled and Wally Mayer's long double, gave the Red Sox their second and final run of the game in the next inning.
The Indians slaughtered the Yankees New York 12-4 in New York. Joe Wood had a double and three singles. They remain two games behind the Sox. Washington lost to Detroit 8 to 7. |
