“DIARY OF A WINNER”

THE LAST ONE FOR 86 YEARS
It's all Sam Jones and Harry Hooper

August 28, 1918 ...  With Harry Hooper on a batting spree and Sam Jones, waving his whitewash brush at Fenway Park yesterday, the Red Sox were altogether too much for the Detroit Tigers, winning three to nothing in the final game of the season between these two teams. The Tigers were again without Ty Cobb, who reported for military duty and is now a captain in the Chemical Warfare Service.

There were others that had much to do with the victory, notably Strunk, Scott, Cochran and McInnis. But it was Harry Hooper, who had a pair of doubles and a triple that banged up the pitching of Hooks Dauss.

Only in the first and eighth innings did things look cloudy for Jones, but as the world knows he is very cool under fire. He held the Tigers to three hits and one of those never got out of the infield. Sam just burned them over in his slick style.

Amos Strunk singled to first, and drove Harry Hooper home after he had laced a double to left. Hooper doubled again in the third over first base down the right-field line and in the fifth it looked as if he had beaten out a sweet bunt down the third base line, but he was thrown out in a close play. He delivered again in the eighth. With one out, Sam Agnew singled and Harry Hooper tripled to the bank in left centerfield. Bobby Jones tried to get Hooper at third, but the throw got by him and Dauss, who was backing up the play bobbled the ball, allowing Harry Hooper to score again.

The Red Sox now lead by 3 1/2 games as the Indians lost in Philadelphia, 1-0. If Cleveland wins out, the Red Sox must only win three of their six remaining games to clinch the pennant.
